Southwold

SOUTHWOLD is a charming and notorious Suffolk seaside town on the beautiful Suffolk Heritage Coast. With strong links to the sea this is a wonderful holiday destination at anytime of the year. With its working lighthouse, award winning Art Deco pier, colourful beach huts, busy harbor and of course the beach you will not be stuck for something to enjoy or do. This is a quintessentially English sea side resort town of character. Southwold was the holiday destination for Gordon Brown and his family in 2009 prior to that a visit was paid by Charles and Camilla. Younger family members may recognize other landmarks as it is the location for Grandpa in my Pocket, a CBeebies favourite! Other unusual features in the town which are worth visiting include the Water Clock, situated half way down the pier, and The Electric Palace Cinema, a Victorian picture palace seating just 66 people which was re-opened by Michael Palin in 2002 following complete restoration by local craftsmen.

SOUTHWOLD GOLF COURSE is a challenging nine-hole heath land course which is free draining and playable virtually all year round. This is a members club which was established over 120 years ago. It features greens that have received much praise, and are widely regarded as amongst the best in East Anglia. PLACES OF INTEREST

SOUTHWOLD, THE BEACH, PIER AND TOWN - Southwold remains one of Suffolk’s most visited and popular towns on the Heritage Coast. It retains its old world charm and boasts one of the best sandy beaches in East Anglia. The pier was built in 1900 and in 2002 won the ‘Pier of the Year’ award. The town has many independent boutiques and shops along with good restaurants and bistros. You can also enjoy the freshest fish and chips for miles, locally caught fish of course!

WALBERSWICK – distance from Southwold approximately 7 miles
Across the River Blyth from Southwold you'll find the affluent coastal village of Walberswick - another charming destination which is popular with ramblers and nature lovers owing to its wide variety of flora and fauna, not forgetting crabbing enthusiasts - this is the location for the annual summer British Open Crabbing Championship. In the centre of Walberswick village you will find a quaint village pub serving traditional food.

 

DUNWICH & MINSMERE distance from Southwold approximately 8 miles
Dunwich is a super location for walking and cycling over the natural heath land. Visit the ruins of the 13th century Greyfriars Friary or walk along to the Dingle Marshes. Close by is Minsmere, one of the RSPB’s most famous nature reserves. It has been a RSBP reserve for over 50 years and pioneered the use of observation hides and management of wetland areas to enable visitors to view the huge range of birds that pass along the Suffolk coast.

 

ALDEBURGH – distance from Southwold approximately 18 miles
For a wonderful day out you cannot beat the coastal town of Aldeburgh, situated on Suffolk’s Heritage Coast. This town is still full of old world charm with historic architecture and miles of super shingle beach. Home to the Aldeburgh Festival and with attractions such as the Moot Hall Museum, the RNLI centre and the Scallop sculpture by artist Maggie Hambling. Enjoy the freshest fish and chips or take home the local catch still sold from huts on the beach,
